OK, Now on to the Control Panel: |

|
There are two parts to the Control
Panel, the Main Panel and the Disconnect Switches: |

|
This box is just for a 120 volt convenience outlet. It does not affect the SPS operation. |
|
The power for the operation of the SPS
normally comes from underground cables that connect the Automatic Transfer
Switch (see above but explained later) to the Maui Power meters near G and H
Buildings. Power is delivered to the
Main Panel through the Transfer Switch.
If the main power fails, the Transfer Switch will be automatically
switched to allow the Emergency Generator to supply power to the Main
Panel. This is explained later.
For the Control Panel explanation, it is assumed that power is
available from one of these two sources.
Without power from these sources, nothing will work—not the pumps or the
alarms. So although emergency power is
available, it is important to understand how this system works in the event
of a power failure. Without power, the level in the
Wetwell will continue to rise until the level reaches the overflow pipe. At that point, sewage will overflow into
the Overflow (holding) Tank, which holds approximately 30,000 gallons—quite a
few days of normal outflow from Paniolo Hale.
Normally, the Overflow Tank is pretty much empty, and it should be
kept that way to have maximum emergency capacity. So if sewage DOES overflow into the tank,
it should be pumped out as soon as it is practical. This operation is also explained later. |
